Panta Rei

PANTA REI
Project
Bogdan Aleksandrov, artist

Media create the fiction that shapes the world. The Simulacrum (the Unreal Semblance) dominates over reality or fully displaces it. The dynamics of change and re-modulation of society is an active process and we all live “actively” in it. Doubtful grandiose events participate in forming public opinion over a diminishing world. Art, having “achieved” its time, has “dissolved” into it, while in the responsibility to create the spiritual world of ideas it has also “attached” to the virtual world based in the Internet. As a result, this doubled non-reality has transformed into something much more – into Truth – through the living spiritualized global Network.
Civilizations have originated in the great river basins. Because of that those places have attracted people and wisdom; great ideas and world empires have been conceived and eroded away there. And today that makes them an interesting location for scientific and artistic research.
The Panta Rei project will study the dynamics and relations between everyday life along the largest European river, in correlation with the subconscious human feeling of becoming one with time/space which is bred by the imposing nature of the water’s dimensions and amplified by the elements’ raw potential.
Currently I am working in a town located along this river, and from my studio window I can see part of it every day. This view becomes fundamental to my concept of the river. On the other hand, I understand that the new bridge-construction works near the town are constantly monitored in the company’s headquarters through web cameras installed at the construction site. The numerous cameras mounted at different, and for the rest of the world, relatively randomly chosen locations transmit images from a fixed viewer’s perspective. In most cases this kind of choice is not characteristic for human beings. The image being reproduced and imposed is altered by the optic device and technical parameters of the web cameras, an image with its own esthetics and ability to convey artistic messages. The way humans perceive the river is changed. Thus relatively common (or ordinary), not quite intriguing and impressing perspectives, become significant, important and memorable images.
In short, I am creating a painting cycle of 10 works by using Internet images received in real time from webcams installed at different locations along the river. In the technique of their execution I add visual noise which reemphasizes the base media which facilitated their production.

Bogdan Alexandrov NOISE. Portraits of a Dear Person

11 May 2010 - 06 June 2010

Autism. A disorder of neural development that prevents adequate perception of and interaction with the surrounding world and affects the processing of information acquired through the senses. A neurological condition that affects the functioning of receptors.
Bogdan Alexandrov learned the above in 1989, when his daughter, Emiliana, was two and a half years old. What came next was a visit to a Swiss clinic applying a method for the treatment of autistic people that consists in an attempt to correct the sound receptor by exposing the latter to filtrated sound that is gradually becoming louder and louder until it reaches, at the end of the therapy, the tolerable limits of loudness. The method is based on the assumption that you get accustomed to loud noise. You no longer hear the trams passing by your window by the end of the second week of exposure to that sound.
Twenty years later this personal story provided the basis for the creation of a cycle of works, namely large format portraits, through the addition/layering of color noise to the point where the image vanishes. The idea is based on a physical phenomenon occurring in the process of using technical or digital equipment for image fixing or reproduction – the so called visual noise (grain structure remarkably reminiscent of white noise) is added (generated) to the image to produce an extra-rational effect.
Change in the positioning of meanings and the reversal of the works’ message transforms them into an artistic and symbolic “therapy” targeted at “normal” people.
The exhibition features eighteen 130cm/200cm works, arranged on the mirror principle. Each pair of binary works is connected with headphones and a flash-stick that take the viewer into the sound environment. Color noise and mirror (binary) images are generated with the help of foam.

"noise" opening, may 11th!

11th of May-6th of June 2010, opening, May 11th, Tuesday, 6:00pm

noise portraits

BINARY NOISE PORTRAITS

A briefly-narrated story – a pretext to create a series of portraits
Autism. А development disorder which hampers the human individual’s perception of and interaction with the surrounding world, as well as the organization and understanding of information received through the senses. A neurological disease (disability), as a consequence of which, the receptors’ functioning changes.
I found out about that in 1989. My daughter was 2 and half years old, and I was just completing my arts studies. Confusion and panic were followed by frantic search for ways to overcome that condition of hers. With Emiliana we ended up in a Swiss clinic where they applied a particular method for treating autistic people. Its specifics lie in the attempt to improve the sound receptor through exposing it to gradually increasing filtered noise. During the last therapy sessions the sound reached the limits acceptable for the ear. That method is based on the circumstance that individuals get accustomed to the strong noise. One stops hearing the tram passing by under their window by the end of the second week.
After 20 years, this personal story is my reason to create a series of works – large-format portraits – through adding up/laying of color noise until the image disappears. The swap of the meanings’ positions and the change of the message direction in the works transform them into an artistic and symbolic ‘therapy’ addressed to the ‘normal’ people.
Description/Method of realization
The project Binary Noise Portraits is designed to take place in a gallery space as an exhibition and a sound installation. It will present 18 works, format 130/200cм, arranged on а mirror-image principle. Each pair of binary works is connected to headphones and a flash-stick which transfer the participant into the noise environment. The material used for laying the color noise is porous foam and serves for creating the mirror (binary) images.

«Entrebâillement»

un film réalisée par
Bogdan ALEKSANDROV
